Better Yields,
and a Better Future

About African Biochar: Sustainable Agriculture

Our Mission

At African Biochar, our mission is to promote sustainable agricultural practices by harnessing biochar's potential. We can enhance food security by boosting crop yields, restore mined land, create sustainable construction and supply chain materials, and capture carbon to fight climate change for a healthier planet.

Sourcing

Sourced from Artisan Producers in Namibia and South Africa. By using Artisan rather than large-scale commercial production, our suppliers employ hundreds to thousands of local rural workers providing much-needed employment and economic stimulus in remote areas of Southern Africa.

We mainly supply in Southern Africa but are happy to export to farther destinations upon request.

Organic & Eco-Friendly

Biochar is a charcoal-like substance that is made by burning organic material from agricultural and forestry wastes such as wood, agricultural residues, and other biomasses.

It is made through a process called pyrolysis, which involves heating the biomass in a low-oxygen environment. This process converts the biomass into a solid, carbon-rich material with a high surface area.

Biochar

Soil Health and Structure Enhancement

Biochar improves soil physical properties by reducing bulk density, enhancing porosity, and increasing water-holding capacity. These changes aid in water retention, root development, and nutrient availability, especially in compacted or degraded soils.

Improved Chemical Properties for Better Nutrient Retention

Biochar application positively impacts soil chemical properties by increasing soil pH, reducing salinity, and enhancing cation exchange capacity (CEC), which helps retain essential nutrients and prevents leaching. This is particularly beneficial in low-nutrient soils.

Enhanced Water Use Efficiency and Reduced Fertilizer Needs

Biochar improves water use efficiency by up to 20%, with higher efficiency for leafy crops. Acting as a slow-release fertilizer, it retains nutrients in the soil, reducing the need for frequent irrigation and fertiliser application.

Boost to Soil Microbial Activity

Biochar provides carbon and nutrients, creating a favourable habitat for soil microorganisms. This increases microbial activity and biomass, supporting nutrient cycling and soil stability.

Increased Crop Productivity

Biochar application has improved crop yields by 1–42%, particularly in low-nutrient soils. Field studies have demonstrated benefits for both field and tree crops, including enhanced growth rates, increased fruit yields, and improved crop resilience.

Uses of Biochar

Biochar's versatile properties make it an essential resource for agriculture, land recovery, construction, and more.

Agriculture

Farmers worldwide are incorporating biochar into their practices to achieve sustainable and profitable agriculture.

Biochar enhances agricultural productivity by improving soil health, acting as a natural soil conditioner:

  • Soil Fertility: Increases nutrient retention and reduces the need for chemical fertilizers.
  • Water Retention: Improves soil's ability to retain moisture, especially in arid regions.
  • Microbial Activity: Supports beneficial microorganisms, leading to healthier crops.
  • Carbon Sequestration: Stores carbon in the soil, reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Mine Rehabilitation

Biochar's ability to rejuvenate lifeless land makes it an invaluable tool for environmental rehabilitation, including restoring ecosystems damaged by mining:

  • Soil Remediation: Neutralises toxic substances and heavy metals in contaminated soils.
  • Erosion Control: Stabilises soil and prevents further degradation.
  • Vegetation Growth: Enhances conditions for replanting and reforestation on degraded land.
  • Water Quality: Improves water retention and reduces leaching of pollutants into groundwater.

Sustainable Construction Material

Biochar is emerging as a sustainable material in the construction industry:

  • Concrete Additive: Enhances the strength and durability of concrete while reducing its carbon footprint.
  • Thermal Insulation: Improves building energy efficiency by acting as an insulating agent.
  • Lightweight Aggregates: Used in eco-friendly building materials for sustainable construction projects.
  • Carbon Neutrality: Reduces the overall environmental impact of construction projects.

Others

Biochar's versatility continues to unlock innovative solutions for environmental and industrial challenges. Beyond agriculture, mining, and construction, biochar has a wide range of additional applications:

  • Water Filtration: Acts as a natural filter to remove impurities from water.
  • Animal Husbandry: Supports livestock and poultry health, improves bedding quality, and helps reduce odours.
  • Waste Management: Enhances the composting process and reduces odours.
