Enhancing soil health and crop yield with eco-friendly practises.
At African Biochar, our mission is to promote sustainable agricultural practices by harnessing biochar's potential. We can enhance food security by boosting crop yields, restore mined land, create sustainable construction and supply chain materials, and capture carbon to fight climate change for a healthier planet.
Sourced from Artisan Producers in Namibia and South Africa. By using Artisan rather than large-scale commercial production, our suppliers employ hundreds to thousands of local rural workers providing much-needed employment and economic stimulus in remote areas of Southern Africa.
We mainly supply in Southern Africa but are happy to export to farther destinations upon request.

Biochar is a charcoal-like substance that is made by burning organic material from agricultural and forestry wastes such as wood, agricultural residues, and other biomasses.
It is made through a process called pyrolysis, which involves heating the biomass in a low-oxygen environment. This process converts the biomass into a solid, carbon-rich material with a high surface area.
Biochar PropertiesAgricultural and forestry waste materials collected from rural communities
Biomass heated in a low-oxygen environment at high temperatures
Stable carbon-rich solid with high surface area and porous structure
Biochar applied to agricultural land, enhancing soil health and crop yields
Biochar improves soil physical properties by reducing bulk density, enhancing porosity, and increasing water-holding capacity. These changes aid in water retention, root development, and nutrient availability, especially in compacted or degraded soils.
Biochar application positively impacts soil chemical properties by increasing soil pH, reducing salinity, and enhancing cation exchange capacity (CEC), which helps retain essential nutrients and prevents leaching. This is particularly beneficial in low-nutrient soils.
Biochar improves water use efficiency by up to 20%, with higher efficiency for leafy crops. Acting as a slow-release fertilizer, it retains nutrients in the soil, reducing the need for frequent irrigation and fertiliser application.
Biochar provides carbon and nutrients, creating a favourable habitat for soil microorganisms. This increases microbial activity and biomass, supporting nutrient cycling and soil stability.
Biochar application has improved crop yields by 1–42%, particularly in low-nutrient soils. Field studies have demonstrated benefits for both field and tree crops, including enhanced growth rates, increased fruit yields, and improved crop resilience.

Biochar's versatility continues to unlock innovative solutions for environmental and industrial challenges. Beyond agriculture, mining, and construction, biochar has a wide range of additional applications:
African Biochar's operations directly support five key UN Sustainable Development Goals — creating lasting positive impact for people and planet across Southern Africa.
We contribute to job creation and economic growth in local communities through the sale and distribution of Biochar.
Biochar improves soil fertility and water retention, enhancing agricultural productivity to increase crop yields and food security.
We empower women economically and socially by offering roles in production, management, or community outreach to reduce gender inequalities.
Biochar reduces the need for carbon-intensive fertilisers and the resultant greenhouse gases.
Our Biochar is sourced with feedstock (alien invasives and nuisance bush) that degrades land. Biochar improves ecosystems by enhancing soil health and mitigating erosion.
